The Coin in the Fish’s Mouth Matthew 17:24–27 When the temple tax collectors confronted Peter, Jesus didn’t argue His exemption as the Son of God. Instead, He taught a deeper lesson: “Go to the sea, cast in a hook, and take the fish that comes up first. When you open its mouth, you will find a stater coin. Take that and give it to them for Me and you. ”That single word—“stater” (στατήρ in Greek)—carries a world of meaning.
