Christ as Our I, Our Self, and Our Conscience

Scripture Focus

Galatians 2:20; John 14:20, 23 (ESV) “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me… In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you… If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.”

Meditation

When Christ lives in us through His words abiding richly within, He does not stand beside us—He becomes the very center of who we are.

● The old “I” (our ego, the independent center that once said “I live, I decide, I strive”) has been crucified with Him. Now, when we say “I,” it is no longer the old separated I that speaks and acts, but Christ Himself living as our I. The awareness that says “I think, I choose, I love” is now animated by Him.

● The old self (our entire personality, habits, desires, and identity rooted in Adam) has been put off. In its place, we have put on the new self, created after the likeness of God. This new self is Christ formed in us—our true identity, hidden with Christ in God.

● The old conscience (defiled by sin, accusing or excusing weakly) has been cleansed by His blood and filled with His Spirit. Now our conscience bears His witness, thinks His thoughts, and feels what He feels. We walk with Christ-consciousness—His purity, His sensitivity, His peace guiding us from within.

All of this happens as His words dwell in us. His words renew our conscience, reshape our self, and replace the voice of the old I with His own gentle voice.Today, rest in this mystery:

Christ is not improving your old I, self, and conscience.

He is living as your new I, your true self, and your purified conscience.

Reflection Questions

1. In what moment today did the old “I” try to take control again? Can I surrender that moment and let Christ live as my I?

2.Where do I still feel the tension of the old self? Which word of Jesus can I receive today to let Him express His new self through me?

3.Has my conscience been accusing me, or bearing gentle witness to Christ’s righteousness? How can His word quiet the old voice and amplify His?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for crucifying my old I with You on the cross. Thank You for becoming my new I—the center from which I live. Renew my self today; let me see myself only as hidden with You in God. Purify and fill my conscience with Your own thoughts and peace. Let Your words abide in every part of me, so that when I speak, think, or act, it is truly You living as me. I love You, and I keep Your word. Make Your home in all of me—my I, my self, my conscience. Amen.

Closing Verse

“To them God chose to make known… this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.” (Colossians 1:27)
