The Book of Life and the Lamb Devotional
Lamb
Scripture Focus
Revelation 13:8 (ESV)
“…and all who dwell on earth will worship it [the beast], everyone whose name has not been written before the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who was slain.”
Devotional Thought
In the closing book of the New Testament, John unveils a truth that echoes through every page of the apostolic writings: salvation is eternal, sovereign, and centered on the Lord Jesus Christ.
The “book of life” belongs to the Lamb who was slain. This is no afterthought in God’s plan. Before a single star was kindled, before the foundations of the world were laid, the triune God decreed that a people would be redeemed—and their names were written in the Lamb’s book on the basis of His foreseen, substitutionary death.
Paul captures the same eternal perspective when he writes to the Ephesians:
“[God] chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ…” (Ephesians 1:4–5).
Peter declares that we were redeemed “with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of you” (1 Peter 1:19–20).
And Jesus Himself, praying to the Father on the night He was betrayed, said:
“Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory that you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world” (John 17:24).
Every name written in the book of life was secured by the blood of the eternal Son, who took on flesh to accomplish in time what was planned in eternity.
Reflection
● Does the eternal nature of your salvation comfort you today? Nothing—no sin, no failure, no circumstance—can erase a name the Father inscribed in the Lamb’s book before time began.
● Are you resting in the finished work of the Lamb who was slain? There is no other ground of assurance. Not our feelings, not our performance, but His once-for-all sacrifice.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, Lamb of God who was slain from before the foundation of the world, I worship You. Thank You for bearing my sins in Your body on the tree, for purchasing my name in Your book with Your own blood. Give me fresh wonder at the eternal love that chose me, redeemed me, and keeps me forever. May I live today as one whose citizenship is in heaven, whose name is written in heaven, whose future is secured by the unchangeable decree of the Father and the unbreakable power of Your resurrection. To You be glory forever. Amen.
Closing Verse
Hebrews 13:20–21
“Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, equip you with everything good that you may do his will…”
