The Coin in the Fish’s Mouth devotional
The Coin in the Fish’s Mouth
Matthew 17:24–27
When the temple tax collectors confronted Peter, Jesus didn’t argue His exemption as the Son of God. Instead, He taught a deeper lesson: “Go to the sea, cast in a hook, and take the fish that comes up first. When you open its mouth, you will find a stater coin. Take that and give it to them for Me and you.
”That single word—“stater” (στατήρ in Greek)—carries a world of meaning.
It comes from the verb ἵστημι, “to cause to stand” or “to place on the balance scale.” In the ancient marketplace, merchants tested every coin on small scales. They placed an official standard weight on one side and the coin on the other. If the pans balanced—if the coin made the scale “stand” level—it was genuine, full-weight, trustworthy. If it tilted, the coin was rejected: underweight, clipped, counterfeit.A true stater was the “stand” that brought balance.
Now hear the quiet miracle: the fish delivers a perfect stater—exactly enough to cover the tax for both Jesus and Peter. One coin. Full weight. No shortage, no excess. Perfect balance.
And here is where the story becomes our own.
Life is a scale.
Burdens on one side, fears on the other.
Relationships tilt. Finances wobble. Hearts grow anxious when things don’t “balance.”We frantically add more—more effort, more control, more excuses—hoping the pans will level out. But they rarely do.
Jesus says, “Let Me be your stater. Let Me be the standard weight that makes everything stand.”
He is the cornerstone the builders rejected, yet the One who aligns every stone in God’s building (1 Peter 2:6–7).
He is the unchanging measure by which all else is weighed.
When Christ becomes the “stand” in our lives—the reference point, the foundation, the perfect weight—then, and only then, do the scales of our souls find equilibrium.
Peace where there was panic.
Rest where there was striving.
Grace where there was guilt. The miracle wasn’t just that a fish carried a coin.
The miracle is that Jesus Himself is the Coin—the full-weight, never-failing provision—who enters the chaos of our lives and says, “This is enough. For you and for Me. Paid in full.”
Today, whatever feels off-balance, bring it to Him.
Let Him be your stater.
Watch the scales settle.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, You are my perfect weight, my true standard, my living stater. I lay every tilting part of my life on Your scale. Thank You that You are always enough—never short, never lacking. Bring balance to my heart today. Teach me to trust Your provision, Your timing, Your miracle. In Your precious name, Amen.
Reflection
What area of your life feels “underweight” or unbalanced right now?
Invite Jesus to be the stater there. Speak it out loud if you can: “Lord, be my stand.” Then rest, watching for His quiet, miraculous balance.
He still provides the coin.
He still calms the scale.
He is still enough.
