Chapter 1

Stir the gift. Not a spirit of cowardice

For God did not give to us a spirit of cowardice, but of power and of love and of a sound-mind.

¹ Paul, apostle of Jesus Christ through will of God, according to a promise of life, the one in Christ Jesus,

² to Timothy, beloved child: grace, mercy, peace from God Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

³ I have gratitude to God, to whom I serve from progenitors in a clean conscience, as unceasingly I have the remembrance concerning you in my petitions night and day,

⁴ longing to see you, having been reminded of your tears, that I may be filled with joy,

⁵ taking a remembrance of the unhypocritical faith in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice, and I have been persuaded that also in you.

⁶ Through which cause I remind you to stir-up the gift-of-grace of God, which is in you through the laying-on of my hands.

⁷ For God did not give to us a spirit of cowardice, but of power and of love and of a sound-mind.

⁸ Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord nor of me his bound one, but suffer-evil-with the gospel according to power of God,

⁹ the one having saved us and having called with a holy calling, not according to our works but according to his own purpose and grace, the one having been given to us in Christ Jesus before times age-long,

¹⁰ and now having been manifested through the appearing of our Savior Jesus Christ, having rendered-idle the death and having lighted life and incorruption through the gospel,

¹¹ unto which I was placed a herald and an apostle and a teacher of nations;

¹² through which cause also I suffer these things, but I am not ashamed; for I know whom I have believed, and I have been persuaded that he is able to guard my deposit unto that day.

¹³ Have a sketch of healthy words which you heard from me, in faith and love, the one in Christ Jesus.

¹⁴ The good deposit guard through Holy Spirit, the one dwelling in us.

¹⁵ You know this, that all those in Asia turned-away from me, of whom is Phygellus and Hermogenes.

¹⁶ May the Lord give mercy to the house of Onesiphorus, because he often refreshed me and was not ashamed of my chain,

¹⁷ but having come to be in Rome he sought me more eagerly and found,

¹⁸ — may the Lord give to him to find mercy from Lord in that day — and as many things as he served in Ephesus, you know better.
