Chapter 9

The cheerful giver. God loves

Each according as he chooses beforehand in the heart, not out of grief or out of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver.

¹ For concerning the service, the one unto the holy ones, it is superfluous for me to write to you;

² for I know your readiness, which I boast on behalf of you to Macedonians, that Achaia has been prepared from last-year; and the zeal out of you stirred the more.

³ And I sent the brothers, that our boast, the one on behalf of you, may not be emptied in this part, that, according as I was saying, you may be prepared,

⁴ lest somehow if Macedonians come with me and find you unprepared, we — that we may not say you — may be shamed in this standing-under of the boasting.

⁵ I thought it necessary therefore to call the brothers alongside, that they may come-before unto you and arrange-before your already-announced blessing, this to be ready thus as a blessing and not as greed.

⁶ And this: the one sowing sparingly will also harvest sparingly, and the one sowing upon blessings will also harvest upon blessings.

⁷ Each according as he chooses beforehand in the heart, not out of grief or out of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver.

⁸ And God is able to cause all grace to abound unto you, that in everything always having all self-sufficiency you may abound unto every good work,

⁹ according as it has been written, He scattered, he gave to the poor; his righteousness remains unto the age.

¹⁰ And the one supplying seed to the one sowing and bread unto eating will supply and will multiply your sowing and will increase the products of your righteousness,

¹¹ being enriched in everything unto all simplicity, which works-down through us thanksgiving to God,

¹² because the service of this liturgy not only is filling-up the lacks of the holy ones, but also is overflowing through many thanksgivings to God,

¹³ through the proof of this service glorifying God upon the subjection of your confession unto the gospel of the Christ and simplicity of the fellowship unto them and unto all,

¹⁴ and of them, with petition on behalf of you, longing-after you through the throwing-beyond grace of God upon you.

¹⁵ And thanks to God upon his unspeakable gift.

2 Note — v. 10. TR: χορηγήσει καὶ πληθύνει … αὐξήσει. futures: “will supply and will multiply … will increase.”
