Chapter 8

The grace of giving. He became poor

For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that through you he became poor, being rich, that you by that one’s poverty might become rich.

¹ And we make known to you, brothers, the grace of God, the one having been given in the churches of Macedonia,

² that in much proof of pressure the abundance of their joy and their according-to-depth poverty abounded unto the wealth of their simplicity,

³ that according to power — I witness — and above power, self-chosen,

⁴ with much calling-alongside begging us the grace and the fellowship of the service, the one unto the holy ones, to receive us,

⁵ and not according as we hoped, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and to us through will of God,

⁶ unto the us to call Titus alongside, that according as he began-before, thus he may also complete unto you also this grace.

⁷ But just as in everything you abound — in faith and word and knowledge and all haste and the love out of you in us — that also in this grace you may abound.

⁸ I say not according to a command, but through the haste of the others also proving the genuine of your love.

⁹ For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that through you he became poor, being rich, that you by that one’s poverty might become rich.

¹⁰ And a judgment in this I give; for this profits you, who not only the doing but also the willing began-before from last-year.

¹¹ And now also complete the doing, that just as the readiness of the willing, thus also the completing out of the having.

¹² For if the readiness lies-before, according as if anyone has he is acceptable, not according as he does not have.

¹³ For not that to others ease and to you pressure, but out of equality; in the now season your abundance unto their lack,

¹⁴ that also their abundance may come to be unto your lack, that equality may come to be,

¹⁵ according as it has been written, The one the much did not have-more, and the one the little did not have-less.

¹⁶ And thanks to God, the one giving the same haste on behalf of you in the heart of Titus;

¹⁷ because the calling-alongside he received, and being more hasty, self-chosen he came out toward you.

¹⁸ And we sent-with with him the brother whose praise in the gospel is through all the churches,

¹⁹ and not only, but also having been hand-stretched by the churches as our fellow-away-from-home with this grace, the one being served by us toward the glory of the Lord himself and your readiness,

²⁰ arranging this, lest anyone blame us in this plumpness, the one being served by us,

²¹ providing-before good things not only before Lord but also before men.

²² And we sent-with them our brother, whom we proved in many things often being hasty, and now much more hasty in much confidence, the one unto you.

²³ Whether on behalf of Titus, my partner and unto you a fellow-worker; or our brothers, apostles of churches, glory of Christ.

²⁴ Therefore the showing of your love and of our boasting on behalf of you, show unto them also unto face of the churches.
