Chapter 7

Grief according to God. Titus

16 verses

For the grief according to God works-down a change-of-mind unto salvation unregretted; and the grief of the world works-down death.

¹ Having therefore these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of flesh and spirit, completing holiness in fear of God.

² Make-room for us; we treated no one unjustly, we corrupted no one, we greed-gained no one.

³ I do not say it toward condemnation; for I have said-before that you are in our hearts unto the dying-with and living-with.

⁴ Much frankness to me toward you; much boasting to me on behalf of you; I have been filled with the calling-alongside; I over-abound with the joy upon all our pressure.

⁵ For also, we having come into Macedonia, our flesh has had no ease, but in every way being pressured — outside fights, inside fears.

⁶ But the one calling-alongside the lowly ones called us alongside — God — in the presence of Titus;

⁷ and not only in his presence but also in the calling-alongside with which he was called-alongside upon you, announcing to us your longing, your mourning, your zeal on behalf of me, so as for me rather to rejoice.

⁸ Because if even I grieved you in the letter, I do not regret it, if even I was regretting; for I look that that letter, if even toward an hour, grieved you.

⁹ Now I rejoice, not that you were grieved, but that you were grieved unto a change-of-mind; for you were grieved according to God, that you might be damaged in nothing out of us.

¹⁰ For the grief according to God works-down a change-of-mind unto salvation unregretted; and the grief of the world works-down death.

¹¹ For behold this same thing, the you having been grieved according to God, how much haste it worked-down for you, but a defense, but indignation, but fear, but longing, but zeal, but vengeance. In everything you stood yourselves together to be pure in the matter.

¹² Then if even I wrote to you, it was not for the sake of the one having treated-unjustly, nor for the sake of the one having been treated-unjustly, but for the sake of the being-manifested of your haste, the one on behalf of us, toward you before God.

¹³ Through this we have been called-alongside upon your calling-alongside; and more abundantly rather we rejoiced upon the joy of Titus, because his spirit has been rested from all of you.

¹⁴ Because if I have boasted anything to him on behalf of you, I was not shamed; but as we spoke all things in truth to you, thus also our boasting, the one upon Titus, became truth.

¹⁵ And his inward-parts are more abundantly unto you, he being put-in-mind of the obedience of all of you, as with fear and trembling you received him.

¹⁶ I rejoice that in everything I am of-good-courage in you.

1 Note — v. 12. TR: τὴν σπουδὴν ὑμῶν τὴν ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν. “your haste, the one on behalf of us.”
