Chapter 3

Overseer. Servant. Great is the mystery

Key verse — 1 Timothy 3:16

And confessedly great is the mystery of the godliness: God was manifested in flesh, was justified in Spirit, was seen by angels, was proclaimed in nations, was believed in world, was taken-up in glory.

¹ Faithful is the word: If anyone stretches-after an overseership, he desires a good work.

² It is necessary therefore for the overseer to be unaccused, a man of one woman, sober, sound-minded, well-arranged, hospitable, able-to-teach,

³ not a wine-lingerer, not a striker, not seeking-shameful-gain, but equitable, unfighting, unloving-of-silver,

⁴ standing-before his own house well, having children in arranging-under with all solemnity —

⁵ and if anyone does not know to stand-before his own house, how will he take-care of a church of God? —

⁶ not a newly-planted, that having been puffed he may not fall into a judgment of the slanderer.

⁷ And it is necessary also to have a good witness from those outside, that he may not fall into a reproach and a snare of the slanderer.

⁸ Servants likewise solemn, not double-worded, not holding-toward much wine, not seeking-shameful-gain,

⁹ having the mystery of the faith in a clean conscience.

¹⁰ And let these also first be tested; thereafter let them serve, being unaccused.

¹¹ Women likewise solemn, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things.

¹² Let servants be men of one woman, standing-before children well and their own houses.

¹³ For those having served well acquire for themselves a good step and much frankness in faith, the one in Christ Jesus.

¹⁴ These things I write to you, hoping to come toward you quickly;

¹⁵ and if I delay, that you may know how it is necessary to turn-about in a house of God, which is a church of a living God, a pillar and a base of the truth.
