Chapter 5
As a thief. Sons of light. Always rejoice

Always rejoice. Unceasingly pray. In everything give-thanks; for this is a will of God in Christ Jesus unto you.

1 And concerning the times and the seasons, brothers, you do not have need to be written to you;

2 for you yourselves accurately know that a day of Lord thus comes as a thief in night.

3 For whenever they may say, Peace and security, then sudden destruction stands-upon them, just as the birth-pain to the one having in womb, and they may by no means flee-out.

4 And you, brothers, are not in darkness, that the day may seize you as a thief;

5 for you all are sons of light and sons of day. We are not of night nor of darkness.

6 Therefore then let us not sleep as also the remaining, but let us watch and be sober.

7 For those sleeping sleep by night, and those being drunk are drunk by night;

8 and we, being of day, let us be sober, having put-on a breastplate of faith and of love, and a helmet, a hope of salvation,

9 because God did not place us unto wrath but unto an acquisition of salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,

10 the one having died on behalf of us, that whether we watch or sleep we may live together with him.

11 Wherefore call one another alongside and build one the one, according as also you do.

12 And we ask you, brothers, to know those laboring among you and standing-before you in Lord and putting you in-mind,

13 and to lead them above in love through their work. Be at peace among yourselves.

14 And we call you alongside, brothers, put-in-mind the unordered, call-alongside the little-souled, hold-against the weak, be long-tempered toward all.

15 Look lest anyone give-back to anyone a bad thing against a bad thing, but always pursue the good both unto one another and unto all.

16 Always rejoice.

17 Unceasingly pray.

18 In everything give-thanks; for this is a will of God in Christ Jesus unto you.

19 Do not quench the Spirit.

20 Do not count-as-nothing prophecies.

21 And prove all things; hold-fast the good.

22 Hold yourselves away from every form of evil.

23 And the God of the peace himself may sanctify you wholly-complete, and your whole spirit and soul and body may be kept unblamed in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ.

24 Faithful is the one calling you, who also will do it.

25 Brothers, pray concerning us.

26 Greet all the brothers in a holy kiss.

27 I adjure you by the Lord that the letter be read to all the holy brothers.

28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ with you. Amen.

1 Note — v. 27. TR: τοῖς ἁγίοις ἀδελφοῖς. “to all the holy brothers.”

2 Note — v. 28. TR ends with Ἀμήν.
