Chapter 20

The tomb. Peace to you. Thomas

Because you have seen me, Thomas, you have believed; blessed are those who did not see and believed.

¹ And on the first of the Sabbaths Mary the Magdalene comes early, it still being dark, into the tomb, and she sees the stone having been taken out of the tomb.

² She runs therefore and comes toward Simon Peter and toward the other disciple whom Jesus was loving, and says to them, “They took the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they laid him.”

³ Peter therefore went out, and the other disciple, and they were coming into the tomb.

⁴ And the two were running together; and the other disciple ran ahead more quickly than Peter and came first into the tomb,

⁵ and having stooped he sees the linen cloths lying; yet he did not enter.

⁶ Simon Peter therefore comes, following him, and entered into the tomb, and he sees the linen cloths lying,

⁷ and the handkerchief which was upon his head, not lying with the linen cloths, but apart, having been wrapped into one place.

⁸ Then therefore the other disciple also entered, the one who came first into the tomb, and he saw and believed;

⁹ for they did not yet know the Scripture, that it is necessary that he rise out of dead ones.

¹⁰ The disciples therefore went away again toward themselves.

¹¹ And Mary was standing at the tomb outside, weeping. As she was weeping therefore, she stooped into the tomb

¹² and sees two angels in white sitting, one toward the head and one toward the feet, where the body of Jesus was lying.

¹³ And those say to her, “Woman, why do you weep?” She says to them, “Because they took my Lord, and I do not know where they laid him.”

¹⁴ And having said these things she turned into the things behind and sees Jesus standing, and she did not know that it is Jesus.

¹⁵ Jesus says to her, “Woman, why do you weep? Whom do you seek?” That one, thinking that it is the gardener, says to him, “Lord, if you carried him away, tell me where you laid him, and I will take him.”

¹⁶ Jesus says to her, “Mary.” That one, having turned, says to him, “Rabboni”—which is said, Teacher.

¹⁷ Jesus says to her, “Do not touch me, for I have not yet gone up toward my Father; but go toward my brothers and say to them, I go up toward my Father and your Father, and my God and your God.”

¹⁸ Mary the Magdalene comes announcing to the disciples that she has seen the Lord, and that he said these things to her.

¹⁹ It being therefore evening on that day, the first of the Sabbaths, and the doors having been shut where the disciples were gathered because of the fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood into the middle and says to them, “Peace to you.”

²⁰ And having said this he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples therefore rejoiced, having seen the Lord.

²¹ Jesus therefore said to them again, “Peace to you; as the Father has sent me, I also send you.”

²² And having said this he breathed on them and says to them, “Receive Holy Spirit.

²³ If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven to them; if you hold any, they have been held.”

²⁴ But Thomas, one out of the Twelve, the one called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came.

²⁵ The other disciples therefore were saying to him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and throw my finger into the mark of the nails, and throw my hand into his side, I will by no means believe.”

²⁶ And after eight days his disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus comes, the doors having been shut, and stood into the middle and said, “Peace to you.”

²⁷ Then he says to Thomas, “Bring your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and throw it into my side, and do not become unbelieving, but believing.”

²⁸ And Thomas answered and said to him, “My Lord and my God.”

²⁹ Jesus says to him, “Because you have seen me, Thomas, you have believed; blessed are those who did not see and believed.”

³⁰ Many other signs therefore Jesus also did before his disciples, which have not been written in this book;

³¹ but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in his name.
