Chapter 9

Saul. The chosen vessel

This one is a chosen vessel to me.

¹ And Saul, still breathing threat and murder into the disciples of the Lord, having gone toward the high priest

² asked from him letters into Damascus toward the synagogues, so that if he found any being of the Way, both men and women, he might bring them bound into Jerusalem.

³ And in the going, it came to be he drew near to Damascus, and suddenly a light from the heaven flashed around him;

⁴ and having fallen upon the earth he heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?”

⁵ And he said, “Who are you, Lord?” And the Lord said, “I am Jesus whom you persecute; it is hard for you to kick against goads.”

⁶ And trembling and astonished he said, “Lord, what do you wish me to do?” And the Lord toward him, “Stand up and go into the city, and it will be spoken to you what it is necessary for you to do.”

⁷ And the men journeying with him had stood speechless, hearing indeed the voice, but seeing no one.

⁸ And Saul was raised from the earth; and his eyes having been opened, he was seeing no one; and leading-by-the-hand they brought him into Damascus.

⁹ And he was three days not seeing, and he did not eat nor drink.

¹⁰ And there was a certain disciple in Damascus, Ananias by name, and the Lord said toward him in a vision, “Ananias.” And he said, “Behold, I, Lord.”

¹¹ And the Lord toward him, “Having stood, go upon the alley being called Straight, and seek in the house of Judas Saul by name, a Tarsian; for behold, he prays,

¹² and he saw in a vision a man, Ananias by name, having entered and having placed a hand on him, so that he may see again.”

¹³ And Ananias answered, “Lord, I have heard from many concerning this man, as many evils he did to your holy ones in Jerusalem;

¹⁴ and here he has jurisdiction from the chief priests to bind all those calling upon your name.”

¹⁵ And the Lord said toward him, “Go, because this one is a chosen vessel to me to bear my name before nations and kings and sons of Israel;

¹⁶ for I will show him how many things it is necessary for him to suffer over my name.”

¹⁷ And Ananias went away and entered into the house, and having placed the hands upon him he said, “Saul, brother, the Lord has sent me—Jesus who was seen by you in the way which you were coming—so that you may see again and be filled of Holy Spirit.”

¹⁸ And immediately there fell away from his eyes as if scales, and he saw again at once, and having stood he was baptized.

¹⁹ And having taken food he was strengthened. And Saul came to be with the disciples in Damascus some days.

²⁰ And immediately in the synagogues he was proclaiming the Christ, that this one is the Son of God.

²¹ And all who were hearing were being astonished and were saying, “Is this not the one who devastated in Jerusalem those calling upon this name, and here he had come for this, that he might bring them bound upon the chief priests?”

²² And Saul was more being empowered and was pouring-together the Jews dwelling in Damascus, proving that this is the Christ.

²³ And as sufficient days were being filled, the Jews planned together to take him away;

²⁴ but their plot was known to Saul. And they were watching the gates both day and night, so that they might take him away.

²⁵ And the disciples, having taken him by night, let him down through the wall, having lowered in a basket.

²⁶ And Saul, having arrived in Jerusalem, was trying to be glued to the disciples; and all were fearing him, not believing that he is a disciple.

²⁷ But Barnabas, having taken him, brought him toward the apostles and recounted to them how in the way he saw the Lord, and that he spoke to him, and how in Damascus he spoke boldly in the name of Jesus.

²⁸ And he was with them going in and going out in Jerusalem,

²⁹ and speaking boldly in the name of the Lord Jesus. And he was both speaking and questioning toward the Hellenists; and they were attempting to take him away.

³⁰ And the brothers, having known, brought him down into Caesarea and sent him out into Tarsus.

³¹ The assemblies therefore throughout the whole of Judea and Galilee and Samaria were having peace, being built and going in the fear of the Lord, and in the encouragement of the Holy Spirit they were being multiplied.

³² And it came to be Peter, going through all, also came down toward the holy ones dwelling Lydda.

³³ And he found there a certain man, Aeneas by name, out of eight years lying upon a pallet, who was paralyzed.

³⁴ And Peter said to him, “Aeneas, Jesus the Christ heals you; stand up and spread for yourself.” And immediately he stood up.

³⁵ And all those dwelling Lydda and the Sharon saw him, and they turned upon the Lord.

³⁶ And in Joppa there was a certain disciple, Tabitha by name, which being translated is said Dorcas; this one was full of good works and of alms which she was doing.

³⁷ And it came to be in those days that she, having been weak, died; and having washed they placed her in an upper room.

³⁸ And Lydda being near Joppa, the disciples, having heard that Peter is in it, sent two men toward him, calling-alongside not to delay to come through as far as them.

³⁹ And Peter, having stood up, went with them; whom, having arrived, they brought up into the upper room, and all the widows stood by him weeping and showing tunics and garments, as many as Dorcas was making, being with them.

⁴⁰ And Peter, having thrown all outside and having placed the knees, prayed; and having turned toward the body he said, “Tabitha, stand up.” And she opened her eyes, and having seen Peter she sat up.

⁴¹ And having given her a hand he stood her up; and having called the holy ones and the widows he presented her living.

⁴² And it became known throughout the whole of Joppa, and many believed upon the Lord.

⁴³ And it came to be he remained sufficient days in Joppa with a certain Simon, a tanner.
