Cornelius. What God cleansed

The things God cleansed, you do not make common.

¹ And a certain man was in Caesarea, Cornelius by name, a centurion out of the cohort being called Italian,

² pious and fearing God with all his house, both doing many alms to the people and petitioning God through all,

³ he saw in a vision clearly, about the ninth hour of the day, an angel of God having entered toward him and saying to him, “Cornelius.”

⁴ And he, having gazed at him and having become terrified, said, “What is it, Lord?” And he said to him, “Your prayers and your alms went up unto a memorial before God.

⁵ And now send men into Joppa and send-for Simon, who is surnamed Peter.

⁶ This one lodges with a certain Simon, a tanner, whose house is beside the sea; this one will speak to you what it is necessary for you to do.”

⁷ And as the angel who was speaking to Cornelius went away, having called two of his household-servants and a pious soldier of those continuing with him,

⁸ and having recounted all things to them, he sent them into Joppa.

⁹ And the morrow, those journeying and drawing near to the city, Peter went up upon the housetop to pray, about the sixth hour.

¹⁰ And he became hungry and was wishing to taste; and they preparing, an ecstasy fell upon him,

¹¹ and he sees the heaven opened and a certain vessel coming down upon him, as a great sheet, bound at four beginnings and being let down upon the earth,

¹² in which were all the four-footed of the earth and the wild beasts and the reptiles and the birds of the heaven.

¹³ And a voice came to be toward him, “Having stood, Peter, sacrifice and eat.”

¹⁴ And Peter said, “By no means, Lord, because I never ate anything common or unclean.”

¹⁵ And a voice again out of a second toward him, “The things God cleansed, you do not make common.”

¹⁶ And this came to be upon three times, and the vessel was taken up again into the heaven.

¹⁷ And as Peter was thoroughly-at-a-loss in himself what the vision which he saw might be, behold, the men who had been sent from Cornelius, having asked-through for the house of Simon, stood upon the gate,

¹⁸ and having called they were inquiring if Simon, the one surnamed Peter, lodges here.

¹⁹ And Peter pondering concerning the vision, the Spirit said to him, “Behold, three men seek you.

²⁰ But having stood, go down and go with them, judging nothing, because I have sent them.”

²¹ And Peter, having gone down toward the men who had been sent from Cornelius toward him, said, “Behold, I am whom you seek; what is the cause on account of which you are present?”

²² And they said, “Cornelius, a centurion, a man righteous and fearing God, being witnessed also by the whole nation of the Jews, was instructed by a holy angel to send-for you into his house and to hear words from you.”

²³ Having called them in therefore he lodged them. And the morrow Peter went out with them, and some of the brothers from Joppa went with him.

²⁴ And the morrow they entered into Caesarea. And Cornelius was expecting them, having called together his relatives and the necessary friends.

²⁵ And as it came to be for Peter to enter, Cornelius, having met him, having fallen upon the feet, worshipped.

²⁶ And Peter raised him, saying, “Stand up; I myself also am a man.”

²⁷ And conversing with him he entered and finds many having come together.

²⁸ And he said toward them, “You grasp how unlawful it is for a man, a Jew, to be glued to or to come toward an alien; and God showed me to call no man common or unclean.

²⁹ Therefore also, having been sent-for, I came without speaking-against. I inquire therefore, for what word you sent-for me.”

³⁰ And Cornelius said, “From four days until this hour I was fasting, and the ninth hour praying in my house, and behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing

³¹ and says, Cornelius, your prayer was heard and your alms were remembered before God.

³² Send therefore into Joppa and call-for Simon who is surnamed Peter; this one lodges in the house of Simon, a tanner, beside the sea; who, having arrived, will speak to you.

³³ At once therefore I sent toward you, and you did well having arrived. Now therefore we are all present before God to hear all the things that have been arranged to you by God.”

³⁴ And Peter, having opened the mouth, said, “Upon truth I grasp that God is not a receiver-of-faces,

³⁵ but in every nation the one fearing him and working righteousness is acceptable to him.

³⁶ The word which he sent to the sons of Israel, announcing-good-news of peace through Jesus Christ—this one is Lord of all—

³⁷ you know the thing that came to be throughout the whole of Judea, beginning from Galilee after the baptism which John proclaimed,

³⁸ Jesus, the one from Nazareth, how God anointed him with Holy Spirit and power, who went through doing-good and healing all those being overpowered by the devil, because God was with him.

³⁹ And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem; whom they also took away, having hanged upon a wood.

⁴⁰ This one God raised on the third day and gave him to become manifest,

⁴¹ not to all the people, but to witnesses who had been appointed-beforehand by God, to us, who ate with him and drank with him after he rose out of dead ones.

⁴² And he charged us to proclaim to the people and to thoroughly-witness that this is the one who has been marked-out by God judge of living and dead.

⁴³ To this one all the prophets witness that everyone who believes into him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.”

⁴⁴ While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those hearing the word.

⁴⁵ And the believers out of circumcision, as many as came with Peter, were astonished, because also upon the nations the gift of the Holy Spirit has been poured out;

⁴⁶ for they were hearing them speaking with tongues and magnifying God. Then Peter answered,

⁴⁷ “Someone is not able to forbid the water, that these should not be baptized, who received the Holy Spirit just as we also?”

⁴⁸ And he ordered them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then they asked him to remain some days.
