Chapter 1

Taken up. The lot. Matthias

You will receive power, the Holy Spirit having come upon you, and you will be my witnesses.

¹ The first word I made concerning all things, O Theophilus, which Jesus began both to do and to teach,

² until the day in which, having commanded the apostles through the Holy Spirit whom he chose, he was taken up;

³ to whom he also presented himself living after he suffered, in many sure tokens, through forty days being seen by them and saying the things concerning the kingdom of God.

⁴ And being assembled-with them he charged them not to separate from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, “which you heard from me;

⁵ because John on the one hand baptized with water, but you will be baptized in Holy Spirit not after many these days.”

⁶ They therefore, having come together, were asking him, saying, “Lord, if in this time you restore the kingdom to Israel?”

⁷ And he said toward them, “It is not of you to know times or seasons which the Father placed in his own jurisdiction;

⁸ but you will receive power, the Holy Spirit having come upon you, and you will be my witnesses both in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and as far as the last of the earth.”

⁹ And having said these things, they looking, he was lifted up, and a cloud received him from their eyes.

¹⁰ And as they were gazing into the heaven, he going, and behold two men had stood by them in white clothing,

¹¹ who also said, “Men, Galileans, why do you stand looking into the heaven? This Jesus, the one taken up from you into the heaven, will come thus, in the manner you beheld him going into the heaven.”

¹² Then they returned into Jerusalem from the mount being called of Olive, which is near Jerusalem, a sabbath’s way having.

¹³ And when they entered, they went up into the upper room where they were remaining: both Peter and James and John and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas of James.

¹⁴ These all were continuing with one accord in the prayer and the petition, with women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.

¹⁵ And in these days Peter, having stood up in the midst of the disciples, said—and there was a crowd of names upon the same about a hundred twenty—

¹⁶ “Men, brothers, it was necessary the Scripture to be fulfilled which the Holy Spirit said beforehand through the mouth of David concerning Judas, the one having become guide to those who took Jesus;

¹⁷ because he was numbered among us and obtained the lot of this service.

¹⁸ This one therefore acquired a field out of the wage of the unrighteousness, and having become headlong he burst in the middle, and all his bowels were poured out.

¹⁹ And it became known to all those dwelling in Jerusalem, so that that field was called in their own dialect Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.

²⁰ For it has been written in the book of Psalms, Let his homestead become desolate, and let there not be the one dwelling in it; and, Let another take his oversight.

²¹ It is necessary therefore of the men who went with us in all the time in which the Lord Jesus went in and went out upon us,

²² beginning from the baptism of John until the day in which he was taken up from us, one of these to become a witness of his resurrection with us.”

²³ And they stood two: Joseph the one called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias.

²⁴ And having prayed they said, “You, Lord, knower of hearts of all, show out of these two the one whom you chose,

²⁵ to take the lot of this service and apostleship, from which Judas stepped aside to go into his own place.”

²⁶ And they gave their lots, and the lot fell upon Matthias, and he was voted-together with the eleven apostles.

1 Note — v. 4. TR: συναλιζόμενος. Hard: “being assembled-with” / “being salted-together-with.” Left as assembled-with.

2 Note — v. 7. TR: ἐν τῇ ἰδίᾳ ἐξουσίᾳ. ἐξουσία → jurisdiction.

3 Note — v. 15. TR: ἐν μέσῳ τῶν μαθητῶν. “in the midst of the disciples,” not “brothers.” ὡς ἑκατὸν εἴκοσιν — “about a hundred twenty.”

4 Note — v. 20. TR: τὴν ἐπισκοπὴν αὐτοῦ λάβοι ἕτερος. “Let another take his oversight.” Optative λάβοι kept as “let… take.”

5 Note — v. 23. TR: Βαρσαβᾶν … Ματθίαν. Barsabas. Matthias.

6 Note — v. 26. TR: ἔδωκαν κλήρους αὐτῶν … συγκατεψηφίσθη. “they gave their lots… he was voted-together with.”
