Juridical and substantial
Reading key · not a replacement chapter
Legend
J — juridical transformation: changes standing before God
S — substantial transformation: changes the person, the life, or the body
J+S — both together

The case of Romans 1–11 ends here: God has not cast off his people. Grace, not works. Branches cut and grafted. A covenant that takes away sins. Then the doxology.

A remnant by grace · J

1–6 Has God cast off his people? May it never be. A remnant according to election of grace. If by grace, no longer of works. The people are not saved by Abraham’s flesh. They are reserved by election and grace. J.

7–10 The elect obtained it; the rest were hardened. Eyes that do not see. That is a sentence that falls on perception. Hardening is juridical and is felt in what is real.

Exclusion and admission · J+S

11–15 They did not stumble so as to fall beyond recovery. Through their trespass, salvation to the Gentiles. If their exclusion is the reconciliation of the world, their admission will be life from the dead. Reconciliation is court. Life from the dead points to the substantial — whether of Israel or, behind it, resurrection. J+S.

The olive tree · J+S

16–24 Broken off. Grafted in. Sharing the root and the richness of the olive. Through unbelief they were broken off; by faith you stand. God is able to graft them in again. The tree is not decoration. To be in it is status. The sap is life. Cutting and grafting do not change the wood in a laboratory. They change belonging to the holy root. The Gentile does not support the root. J+S.

All Israel will be saved · J

25–27 Hardening in part, until the fullness of the Gentiles. And so all Israel will be saved. The Deliverer will turn away ungodliness. This will be my covenant, when I take away their sins. Taking away sins is the language of chapters 3–4. Covenant, not alchemy. J.

28–32 As to the gospel, enemies; as to election, beloved. The gifts and the calling are irrevocable. God shut up all in disobedience so as to have mercy on all. The universal case closes in mercy, not in an upgrade of matter.

33–36 Judgments unsearchable. From him, through him, and to him. Doxology is the only honest exit from the court.

Close of Romans 1–11. The world was indicted. The Jew also. No one was justified by works. God counted faith as righteousness. Adam and Christ constituted two classes. Baptism did not change the water; it joined a person to a death. The body is still mortal and groans. The Spirit is firstfruits. Israel was not cast off; it is counted by promise and grafted by faith. The juridical holds the whole case. The substantial — newness of life, sap, redemption of the body — is what that decree will make visible, not what the sign has to become now.

Note — these two changes throughout the New Testament. Juridical transformation and substantial transformation are not an invention of Romans. They run through the New Testament. Some texts count, impute, justify, adopt, forgive, seal a covenant. Others unite to Christ, give the Spirit, speak of newness of life and of a body that will be redeemed. The reader does well to carry both lenses: does this text change standing before God, or the creature itself — now or at the end?

For now the map stops at Romans 1–11, where Paul builds the legal case. In a later time the rest of the letters and the Gospels can be opened with the same key. Here we end this legal case.
