Chapter 1

Onesimus. No longer as a slave. Receive him

For perhaps through this he was separated toward an hour, that age-long you may have him back, no longer as a slave but above a slave, a beloved brother.

¹ Paul, a bound one of Christ Jesus, and Timothy the brother, to Philemon the beloved and our fellow-worker,

² and to Apphia the beloved, and to Archippus our fellow-soldier, and to the church according to your house:

³ grace to you and peace from God our Father and Lord Jesus Christ.

⁴ I give-thanks to my God always, making remembrance of you upon my prayers,

⁵ hearing your love and the faith which you have toward the Lord Jesus and unto all the holy ones,

⁶ that the fellowship of your faith may become in-working in a full-knowledge of every good thing, the one in you, unto Christ Jesus.

⁷ For we have much grace and calling-alongside upon your love, because the inward-parts of the holy ones have been refreshed through you, brother.

⁸ Wherefore, having much frankness in Christ to command to you the thing becoming,

⁹ through the love rather I call-alongside, being such a one as Paul an old man, and now also a bound one of Jesus Christ.

¹⁰ I call you alongside concerning my child, whom I birthed in my bonds, Onesimus,

¹¹ the one once unuseful to you, and now well-useful to you and to me,

¹² whom I sent-back; and you, him, that is my inward-parts, receive;

¹³ whom I was willing to hold-toward myself, that on behalf of you he may serve me in the bonds of the gospel;

¹⁴ and apart from your knowledge I willed to do nothing, that your good may not be as according to necessity but according to willing.

¹⁵ For perhaps through this he was separated toward an hour, that age-long you may have him back,

¹⁶ no longer as a slave but above a slave, a beloved brother, especially to me, and how much more to you both in flesh and in Lord.

¹⁷ If therefore you have me a partner, receive him as me.

¹⁸ And if he treated-you-unjustly anything or owes, this reckon to me.

¹⁹ I Paul wrote with my hand, I will pay-back; that I may not say to you that also you owe to me even yourself.

²⁰ Yes, brother, may I profit from you in Lord; refresh my inward-parts in Lord.

²¹ Having been persuaded of your obedience I wrote to you, knowing that also above what I say you will do.

²² And at the same time also prepare a lodging for me; for I hope that through your prayers I will be graced to you.

²³ Epaphras, my fellow-captive in Christ Jesus, greets you,

²⁴ Mark, Aristarchus, Demas, Luke, my fellow-workers.

²⁵ The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ with your spirit. Amen.
