1 And when morning had come, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus so as to put him to death.
2 And they bound him, led him away, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor.
3 Then Judas, who had betrayed him, seeing that he was condemned, regretted it and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders,
4 saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” But they said, “What is that to us? You see to it.”
5 And he threw the pieces of silver into the temple and departed, and he went away and hanged himself.
6 And the chief priests took the pieces of silver and said, “It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, since it is the price of blood.”
7 And they took counsel and bought with them the potter’s field as a burial place for strangers.
8 Therefore that field has been called Field of Blood to this day.
9 Then was fulfilled what was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet, saying, “And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of the one who was priced, whom they of the sons of Israel priced,
10 and they gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord directed me.”
11 And Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, saying, “Are you the King of the Jews?” And Jesus said to him, “You say it.”
12 And when he was accused by the chief priests and the elders, he answered nothing.
13 Then Pilate says to him, “Do you not hear how many things they testify against you?”
14 And he did not answer him, not even to one word, so that the governor was exceedingly amazed.
15 Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to release to the crowd one prisoner whom they wanted.
16 And they had then a notable prisoner called Barabbas.
17 Therefore when they were gathered, Pilate said to them, “Whom do you want me to release to you? Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?”
18 For he knew that they had delivered him up because of envy.
19 And while he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent to him, saying, “Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for I have suffered many things today in a dream because of him.”
20 But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds that they should ask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus.
21 And the governor answered and said to them, “Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” And they said, “Barabbas.”
22 Pilate says to them, “What then shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” They all say to him, “Let him be crucified!”
23 And the governor said, “Why, what evil has he done?” But they cried out all the more, saying, “Let him be crucified!”
24 And when Pilate saw that he was accomplishing nothing, but rather that a riot was starting, he took water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of the blood of this righteous man. You see to it.”
25 And all the people answered and said, “His blood be on us and on our children.”
26 Then he released Barabbas to them; but Jesus he flogged and delivered to be crucified.
27 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the praetorium and gathered the whole cohort against him.
28 And they stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him.
29 And they wove a crown of thorns and put it on his head, and a reed in his right hand; and kneeling before him they mocked him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!”
30 And they spat on him, and took the reed and kept striking him on the head.
31 And when they had mocked him, they took the robe off him and put his own garments on him, and led him away to crucify him.
32 And as they were going out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name. They compelled this man to carry his cross.
33 And when they came to a place called Golgotha, which means Place of a Skull,
34 they gave him sour wine mixed with gall to drink; and when he had tasted it, he would not drink.
35 And when they had crucified him, they divided his garments, casting lots, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet: “They divided my garments among themselves, and for my clothing they cast lots.”
36 And sitting down they kept watch over him there.
37 And they placed above his head the charge written against him: THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.
38 Then two robbers are crucified with him, one on the right and one on the left.
39 And those passing by were blaspheming him, wagging their heads
40 and saying, “You who destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself. If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross.”
41 Likewise also the chief priests, mocking with the scribes and elders, said,
42 “He saved others; he cannot save himself. If he is the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him.
43 He has trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he wants him; for he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’”
44 And the robbers who were crucified with him were also insulting him with the same words.
45 Now from the sixth hour darkness came over all the land until the ninth hour.
46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lima sabachthani?” that is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
47 And some of those standing there, when they heard it, said, “This man is calling Elijah.”
48 And immediately one of them ran and took a sponge, filled it with sour wine, put it on a reed, and gave him a drink.
49 But the rest said, “Leave him alone. Let us see if Elijah comes to save him.”
50 And Jesus, crying out again with a loud voice, yielded up his spirit.
51 And behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom, and the earth was shaken, and the rocks were split,
52 and the tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised,
53 and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection they entered the holy city and appeared to many.
54 And when the centurion and those with him who were keeping watch over Jesus saw the earthquake and the things that happened, they were exceedingly afraid, saying, “Truly this was the Son of God.”
55 And many women were there, watching from a distance, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, serving him,
56 among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.
57 And when evening had come, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who himself had also become a disciple of Jesus.
58 This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be given.
59 And Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,
60 and laid it in his new tomb, which he had cut in the rock; and he rolled a great stone to the door of the tomb and went away.
61 And Mary Magdalene was there, and the other Mary, sitting opposite the tomb.
62 And on the next day, which is after the Preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate,
63 saying, “Lord, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was still alive, ‘After three days I am raised.’
64 Therefore command that the tomb be made secure until the third day, lest his disciples come by night and steal him away and say to the people, ‘He has been raised from the dead,’ and the last deception will be worse than the first.”
65 Pilate said to them, “You have a guard. Go, make it as secure as you know how.”
66 And they went and made the tomb secure, sealing the stone, together with the guard.
1 Note — v. 24, this righteous man. TR: τοῦ δικαίου τούτου. Pilate names him righteous. The shorter line is not used.
2 Note — v. 35, the lots. TR keeps the fulfillment clause and the citation: they divided my garments… and for my clothing they cast lots.
3 Note — v. 42, we will believe him. TR: πιστεύσομεν αὐτῷ. Not “believe on him.”
4 Note — v. 64, by night. TR: νυκτός. The fear they name is a theft in the night.
v. 46, lima. The received spelling of the cry is left as spoken, then rendered: My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
