And he entered again into the synagogue, and there was a man there who had a withered hand.
And they were watching him, whether he would heal him on the Sabbaths, that they might accuse him.
And he says to the man who had the withered hand, “Rise into the midst.”
And he says to them, “Is it lawful on the Sabbaths to do good, or to do harm, to save a life, or to kill?” But they were silent.
And looking around at them with anger, being grieved at the hardness of their heart, he says to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” And he stretched it out, and his hand was restored healthy as the other.
And the Pharisees went out immediately and were taking counsel with the Herodians against him, how they might destroy him.
And Jesus withdrew with his disciples to the sea, and a great multitude from Galilee followed him, and from Judea,
and from Jerusalem, and from Idumea, and beyond the Jordan, and those around Tyre and Sidon, a great multitude, having heard how many things he was doing, came to him.
And he said to his disciples that a small boat should wait on him because of the crowd, that they might not press him.
For he had healed many, so that they were falling upon him, that they might touch him, as many as had plagues.
And the unclean spirits, when they saw him, would fall down before him and cry out, saying, “You are the Son of God.”
And he charged them much that they should not make him known.
And he goes up into the mountain and calls to himself those whom he himself wanted, and they went away to him.
And he made twelve, that they might be with him, and that he might send them to preach,
and to have jurisdiction to heal the diseases and to cast out the demons.
And he put on Simon the name Peter;
and James the son of Zebedee, and John the brother of James, and he put on them the names Boanerges, which is, Sons of Thunder;
and Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Cananite,
and Judas Iscariot, who also handed him over. And they come into a house.
And a crowd comes together again, so that they were not able even to eat bread.
And those from him, hearing it, went out to seize him; for they were saying, “He is beside himself.”
And the scribes who had come down from Jerusalem were saying, “He has Beelzebul,” and, “By the ruler of the demons he casts out the demons.”
And calling them to himself, he said to them in parables, “How can Satan cast out Satan?
And if a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.
And if a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand.
And if Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand, but has an end.
No one can enter into the house of the strong man and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man, and then he will plunder his house.
Amen I say to you, all the sins of the sons of men will be forgiven, and whatever blasphemies they may blaspheme;
but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit has no forgiveness into the age, but is liable of eternal judgment”—
because they were saying, “He has an unclean spirit.”
Then his brothers and his mother come, and standing outside they sent to him, calling him.
And a crowd was sitting around him, and they said to him, “Look, your mother and your brothers outside are seeking you.”
And he answered them, saying, “Who is my mother, or my brothers?”
And looking around at those sitting in a circle about him, he says, “Look, my mother and my brothers.
For whoever does the will of God, this one is my brother and my sister and mother.”
v. 15, jurisdiction. ἐξουσία again. The twelve are given the sanctioned right to heal diseases and to cast out demons. Critical texts often drop “to heal the diseases.” The TR keeps both.
v. 21, those from him. οἱ παρ᾽ αὐτοῦ. His own people. The Greek does not soften it. They go out to seize him, saying he is beside himself (ἐξέστη).
v. 29, eternal judgment. The TR reads αἰωνίου κρίσεως, “eternal judgment,” not “eternal sin.” Left as it stands.
