SYSTEMATIC MAP OF BELIEVERS

SYSTEMATIC MAP OF BELIEVERS

The Full Arc: From Spiritual Death to Incorruptible Resurrection

1. SIN

State

Standing as sinner before God.
Romans 3:23; Romans 5:12, 19.

Experience

Particular sinful acts.
James 1:14–15 describes how a sinful act is born, not how the sinful state itself begins. It is used here for experience only.

Mechanism of the State

⚠️ Intra-Christian disagreement remains unresolved:
  • Inherited guilt?
  • Inherited corruption?
  • Both?
This map intentionally leaves that question flagged rather than resolved.

No separate physical form. The effects of sin run downstream into death and corruption (Romans 8:20–21).

2. DEATH

A. Spiritual Death — State

“Dead in trespasses and sins.”
— Ephesians 2:1

This is a real spiritual state believers were actually in.

At faith, this state is reversed:

“Has passed from death to life.”
— John 5:24

In this map, John 5:24 applies strictly to the reversal of spiritual death, not to physical death.

B. Physical Death — Experience

The actual event of bodily dying.

This remains ahead for every believer except the last generation alive at Christ's coming.

Conversion resolves:
✓ Spiritual death

Conversion does not immediately resolve:
✗ Physical mortality

Both senses of death are full and real. Conversion resolves the spiritual one, but not the physical one.

3. CORRUPTION

A. Physical Corruption

“It is sown in corruption.”
— 1 Corinthians 15:42

State: Entered at death.

Experience: The actual decomposition or decay of the body.

Believers experience physical death and bodily corruption while awaiting the future bodily resurrection.

“This corruptible must put on incorruption.”
— 1 Corinthians 15:53

B. Moral Corruption

2 Peter 1:4; 2 Peter 2:12; Galatians 6:8.

Moral corruption is not a third nature. It is the moral wasting of the one human nature under sin.

Already / Not Yet:

Dominion broken — Romans 6; 2 Peter 1:4
Liability remains — Romans 7; Galatians 6:8

4. KAKOS (κακός)

Particular Evil Willed or Done

“The evil I will not to do, that I practice.”
— Romans 7:19

Kakos refers here to particular evil willed or done.

The Relationship Between Phthora and Kakos

Phthora = the wasting or corrupting tendency.

Kakos = the particular evil that rises from that condition and also feeds it.

Moral Corruption

Liability Remains

Kakos — Particular Evil

Further Moral Corruption

Believers remain liable and capable of particular evil until glorification.

5. MORAL CORRUPTION / KAKOS — FULL SEQUENCE

Dominion Broken

Liability Remains

Acts Still Possible (Kakos)

Future Deliverance

Body Raised Incorruptible
1 Corinthians 15:53

Liability Itself Ended

The resurrection ends not merely sin's dominion, but the believer's remaining liability itself.

6. CREATURELY / PHYSICAL LIMITATIONS

Hunger, fatigue, growth, and sleep are expressions of creaturely finitude.

Finitude ≠ Sin

Finitude ≠ Corruption

Finitude ≠ Spiritual Death

Creaturely limitations belong to the condition of being a creature.

7. “SPIRITUAL DEATH” — GUARDRAIL FOR THIS MAP

⚠️ In the believers' map, “spiritual death” always means:

The Ephesians 2:1 condition: “dead in trespasses and sins.”

It is:

  • A real state believers were actually in.
  • Reversed at faith.
  • Described by John 5:24 as passing from death to life.

This should not automatically be flattened into the judicial or representative sense used when discussing Christ.

Spiritual Death — Ephesians 2:1 Sense

THE FULL ARC OF THE BELIEVER

SPIRITUALLY DEAD
State — Ephesians 2:1

HEARS AND BELIEVES

PASSED FROM SPIRITUAL DEATH TO SPIRITUAL LIFE
John 5:24

PRESENT CHRISTIAN LIFE — ALREADY / NOT YET
✓ Spiritually alive
✓ Still physically mortal
✓ Still creaturely finite
✓ Morally liable to corruption
✓ Capable of kakos — particular evil acts

Sin's dominion is broken, but final incorruptibility has not yet arrived.

PHYSICAL DEATH
The experience of dying

PHYSICAL CORRUPTION
Bodily decay / decomposition experienced

FUTURE BODILY RESURRECTION
INCORRUPTIBLE
1 Corinthians 15:53

FINAL SYSTEMATIC SUMMARY

SIN
State: sinner before God
Experience: particular sinful acts

SPIRITUAL DEATH
State: dead in trespasses and sins
Reversed at faith

SPIRITUAL LIFE
Present possession through faith

PRESENT “NOT YET”
Physical mortality remains
Moral liability remains
Kakos remains possible

PHYSICAL DEATH

PHYSICAL CORRUPTION

RESURRECTION
THE BODY IS RAISED INCORRUPTIBLE

✓ Physical corruption ended
✓ Moral liability ended
✓ Kakos no longer possible

DOMINION BROKEN IN THE PRESENT → LIABILITY ENDED IN GLORIFICATION

TO GOD BE THE GLORY!

Romans 11:36
