How much more

How Much More!

“How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?”
— Hebrews 9:14 (NKJV)

The phrase "dead works" in Hebrews 9 is often misunderstood. In the context of this chapter, it primarily refers to the works of the Old Covenant—the sacrifices, rituals, and ceremonial observances prescribed under the Law of Moses.

Those works are called dead because they could never accomplish what the blood of Christ would one day do.

They were dead because:

  • They could not remove guilt or truly cleanse the conscience.
  • They were powerless to impart spiritual life.
  • They belonged to a temporary covenant that pointed forward to Christ and has now been fulfilled in Him.

The blood of bulls and goats could provide only an outward, ceremonial cleansing. They served as shadows of the reality to come, but they could never perfect the worshiper from within.

Jesus, however, offered Himself without spot to God through the eternal Spirit. His perfect sacrifice does what no animal sacrifice could ever accomplish: it cleanses the conscience.

This means we no longer have to live burdened by guilt or trapped in endless religious performance. Christ's blood frees us from relying on dead works and brings us into a living relationship with the living God.

Living Sacrifices

That is why Paul writes in Romans 12:1:

“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.”
— Romans 12:1 (NKJV)

Because Jesus has offered the perfect sacrifice once for all, we no longer bring dead sacrifices or depend on dead religious efforts. Instead, we offer our lives as living sacrifices—a continual response of gratitude, worship, and obedience empowered by God's grace.

The Christian life is not about striving to earn God's acceptance. It is about living from the acceptance Christ has already secured through His finished work.

The Good News

If you have been carrying guilt, trying to prove yourself to God, or believing that your performance determines His favor, hear the good news today:

Jesus finished the work.

His blood is enough.

His sacrifice cleanses your conscience, frees you from dead works, and enables you to joyfully serve the living God.

A Question to Reflect On

How much more will the blood of Christ do for you?

More than forgive your sins—it cleanses your conscience, gives you confidence before God, and empowers you to live a life of joyful worship.

Rest in His finished work today. Then rise and serve the living God with freedom, knowing that everything you need has already been provided through Jesus Christ.
