They Uncovered the Roof
A Devotional from Mark 2:1–12
When the four friends reached the house in Capernaum, every door was blocked, every window packed. Jesus was inside, preaching the word to them, but their paralyzed friend could not get near Him. Most people would have shrugged, prayed a quick prayer from the street, and promised to try again next week. These men did something different.
They climbed the outside stairs, hauled their friend onto the flat roof, and started digging. Mark tells us they ἀπεστέγασαν (apestegasan) the roof, literally “un-roofed” it. They removed the very thing that was designed to protect and cover the house, because that protection had become the final barrier between a broken man and the Healer.
Sometimes the biggest obstacles to Jesus are not sin or unbelief, but the good things we hide behind:
▪︎ religious routines that keep us comfortable but never desperate
▪︎ reputations we’re afraid to risk
▪︎ church traditions that feel safe but leave hurting people outside
▪︎ even our own sense of “how things are supposed to be done”
The four friends understood one unbreakable truth: No roof is more important than a soul.
So they tore it open. Dirt fell on the heads of the respectable crowd below. Eyebrows were raised. Someone probably muttered about property damage. None of that mattered. They were willing to look foolish, to make a mess, to destroy what was “meant” to protect, if that’s what it took to get their friend to Jesus.
And Jesus saw their faith, the kind of faith that refuses to be polite when someone is dying on a mat.
He didn’t scold them for the hole in the roof.
He didn’t lecture them about proper protocol.
He looked at the paralytic and said, “Son, your sins are forgiven… Rise, take up your bed, and go home.
”The very place where the roof had been removed became the place where heaven broke through.
Reflection Questions
1. What “roof” in your life, something good or necessary in its place, has become a barrier keeping someone (or yourself) from direct access to Jesus?
2. Are you willing to risk reputation, convenience, or tradition to carry a friend to Christ?
3. Where might God be inviting you to “uncover” something today so that His healing light can get in?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, give me the reckless faith of these four friends.
Make me willing to climb, to dig, to destroy whatever man-made covering keeps hurting people from You.
I don’t want to settle for praying from the street when someone I love is still lies paralyzed.
Teach me that no roof, no rule, no reputation is more valuable than a single soul in Your presence.
Let heaven break through the holes I’m brave enough to make.
Amen.
Go ahead.
Uncover the roof.
Someone is waiting on the other side.
