The two builder devotional
Standing Firm in the Storm: A Devotional from the Parable of the Two Builders
Scripture Reading
Matthew 7:24–27 (NIV)
“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”
Reflection
Notice carefully: Jesus does not say the wise man’s house escaped the storm. The rain fell just as hard, the streams rose just as high, and the winds beat just as fiercely against the house built on the rock as they did against the one built on sand. Both houses were tested by the same relentless assault.
Believers are not promised exemption from life’s storms. Jesus Himself told His disciples, “In this world you will have trouble” (John 16:33). Paul wrote that “we must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God” (Acts 14:22). Peter urged us not to be surprised at the “painful trial you are suffering, as though something strange were happening to you” (1 Peter 4:12). The storms come—grief, temptation, opposition, doubt, persecution, loss. They come suddenly like a flood, or they rise slowly until they threaten to overwhelm us.
The difference is never the absence of the storm, but the presence of the foundation. The house that stands is the one built on hearing and doing the words of Jesus. Obedience is the bedrock. When we put His teachings into practice—loving our enemies, forgiving those who hurt us, seeking first His kingdom, abiding in His love—we are digging deep and laying our lives on the Rock that cannot be shaken.
New Testament Echoes
● “Therefore, since we have been justified through faith… we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope” (Romans 5:1–4).
● “No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear” (1 Corinthians 10:13).
● “Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” (Ephesians 6:17)—the same word we are called to obey becomes our weapon when the winds blow.
● “Everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man…” Jesus’ final warning in the Sermon on the Mount reminds us that mere hearing, even emotional hearing, is not enough. Only doing builds a life that endures.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, You are the Rock. Thank You for speaking truth plainly: storms will come, but You have given me Your words to build upon. Forgive me for the times I have only heard and not obeyed. Today, by Your Spirit, help me put Your teachings into practice—however small the step. When the rains fall and the waters rise, hold me fast. Let the trials reveal, not a collapsing life, but a foundation that is You alone. I trust that because I am anchored to You, I will not fall. In Your strong and faithful name, Amen.
Challenge for Today
Identify one teaching of Jesus you have recently heard (in Scripture, a sermon, or quiet time) but have not yet put into practice. Take one concrete step of obedience today, no matter how small. Build on the Rock while it is still called “today” (Hebrews 3:13). The storm is coming, but so is the grace to stand.
