The Lord's Prayer

Matthew 6:9–13

⁹ Pray, then, in this way: Our Father who is in heaven, let your name be hallowed. ¹⁰ Let your kingdom come. Let your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. ¹¹ Give us today our daily bread. ¹² And forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors. ¹³ And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

Lord, Teach Us to Pray

Luke 11:2–8

² And he said to them, “When you pray, say: Our Father who is in heaven, let your name be hallowed. Let your kingdom come. Let your will be done, as in heaven, so on earth. ³ Give us day by day our daily bread. ⁴ And forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil.”

⁵ And he said to them, “Which of you will have a friend, and will go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves, ⁶ for a friend of mine has come to me from a journey, and I have nothing to set before him’; ⁷ and he from inside will answer and say, ‘Do not trouble me; the door is already shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give you’? ⁸ I say to you, even if he will not rise and give to him because he is his friend, yet because of his persistence he will rise and give him as many as he needs.

The High Priestly Prayer

John 17

¹ These words Jesus spoke, and lifted up his eyes to heaven and said, “Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son also may glorify you, ² as you have given him jurisdiction over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to all whom you have given him. ³ And this is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. ⁴ I have glorified you on the earth. I have finished the work which you gave me to do. ⁵ And now, Father, glorify me with yourself with the glory I had with you before the world was.

⁶ I have manifested your name to the men you gave me out of the world. They were yours, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. ⁷ Now they have known that all things you have given me are from you. ⁸ For I have given them the words you gave me, and they have received them, and have known truly that I came out from you, and they have believed that you sent me. ⁹ I pray for them. I do not pray for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours. ¹⁰ And all mine are yours, and yours are mine, and I am glorified in them. ¹¹ And now I am no longer in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to you. Holy Father, keep through your own name those whom you have given me, that they may be one, as we are. ¹² While I was with them in the world, I kept them in your name. Those you gave me I have kept, and none of them is lost except the son of perdition, that the Scripture might be fulfilled. ¹³ And now I come to you, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves. ¹⁴ I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. ¹⁵ I do not pray that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil. ¹⁶ They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. ¹⁷ Sanctify them through your truth. Your word is truth. ¹⁸ As you sent me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. ¹⁹ And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also may be sanctified through the truth.

²⁰ I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, ²¹ that they all may be one, as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be one in us, that the world may believe that you sent me. ²² And the glory which you gave me I have given them, that they may be one just as we are one: ²³ I in them, and you in me, that they may be perfected into one, and that the world may know that you sent me, and have loved them as you have loved me. ²⁴ Father, I will that they also whom you have given me be with me where I am, that they may behold my glory which you have given me, for you loved me before the foundation of the world. ²⁵ Righteous Father, the world has not known you, but I have known you, and these have known that you sent me. ²⁶ And I have declared to them your name, and will declare it, that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them.”

Strengthened in the Inner Man

Ephesians 3:14–21

¹⁴ For this cause I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, ¹⁵ from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, ¹⁶ that he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in the inner man, ¹⁷ that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, that you, being rooted and grounded in love, ¹⁸ may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and depth and height, ¹⁹ and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. ²⁰ Now to him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, ²¹ to him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

The Word

John 1

¹ In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. ² He was in the beginning with God. ³ All things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made. ⁴ In him was life, and the life was the light of men. ⁵ And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it. ⁶ There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. ⁷ He came as a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all might believe through him. ⁸ He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. ⁹ That was the true Light, which lights every man coming into the world. ¹⁰ He was in the world, and the world was made through him, and the world did not know him. ¹¹ He came to his own, and his own did not receive him. ¹² But as many as received him, to them he gave jurisdiction to become children of God, to those who believe in his name, ¹³ who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of a man, but of God. ¹⁴ And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld his glory, glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. ¹⁵ John bore witness of him and cried out, saying, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me has been put before me, for he was before me.’” ¹⁶ And from his fullness we have all received, and grace upon grace. ¹⁷ For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. ¹⁸ No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, he has declared him.

¹⁹ And this is the witness of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” ²⁰ And he confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.” ²¹ And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” And he said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.” ²² Then they said to him, “Who are you? That we may give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” ²³ He said, “I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as the prophet Isaiah said.” ²⁴ And those who were sent were from the Pharisees. ²⁵ And they asked him and said to him, “Why then do you baptize, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?” ²⁶ John answered them, saying, “I baptize with water, but there stands one among you whom you do not know. ²⁷ It is he who, coming after me, is preferred before me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose.” ²⁸ These things were done in Bethabara beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing. ²⁹ The next day John sees Jesus coming toward him and says, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. ³⁰ This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who is preferred before me, for he was before me.’ ³¹ And I did not know him; but that he should be revealed to Israel, therefore I came baptizing with water.” ³² And John bore witness, saying, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and he remained upon him. ³³ And I did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘Upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining on him, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ ³⁴ And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.”

³⁵ Again, the next day, John stood with two of his disciples. ³⁶ And looking at Jesus as he walked, he says, “Behold, the Lamb of God!” ³⁷ And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. ³⁸ Then Jesus turned and saw them following, and says to them, “What do you seek?” They said to him, “Rabbi” (which is to say, being interpreted, Teacher), “where are you staying?” ³⁹ He says to them, “Come and see.” They came and saw where he was staying, and remained with him that day; it was about the tenth hour. ⁴⁰ One of the two who heard John speak and followed him was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. ⁴¹ He first finds his own brother Simon and says to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is, being interpreted, the Christ). ⁴² And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus looked at him, he said, “You are Simon the son of Jonah. You shall be called Cephas” (which is interpreted, A stone). ⁴³ The next day Jesus wanted to go out into Galilee, and he finds Philip and says to him, “Follow me.” ⁴⁴ Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. ⁴⁵ Philip finds Nathanael and says to him, “We have found him of whom Moses in the Law, and the prophets, wrote: Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” ⁴⁶ And Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip says to him, “Come and see.” ⁴⁷ Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and says of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!” ⁴⁸ Nathanael says to him, “Where do you know me from?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” ⁴⁹ Nathanael answered and says to him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel.” ⁵⁰ Jesus answered and said to him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these.” ⁵¹ And he says to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, hereafter you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.”
